One of the world's great train trips
Taieri Gorge Railway
- Via the rugged Taieri River Gorge, west of Dunedin
- Dunedin-Pukerangi and Dunedin-Middlemarch options
- Half-day return journeys depart daily
The Taieri River Gorge is dramatic in all seasons with dark peaty pools, white water rapids, sheer cliffs, towering viaducts and ten tunnels. Emmy Award-winning television series Great Scenic Railway Journeys described it as “one of the world’s great train trips”.
The Seasider - Amazing Pacific Coastal Scenery
- Via the Pacific Coast Railway, north of Dunedin
- Dunedin-Waitati return, a 90 minute train trip

Operates on scheduled days, including daily 2pm services December–March.
Taieri Gorge Railway and The Seasider train journeys are must-do adventures consistently achieving the highest satisfaction ratings of Dunedin’s visitor attractions.
They are perfect all-weather activities for people of all ages. The carriages are enclosed and heated, and Taieri Gorge trains have open air platforms for uninterrupted views. Light food, tea, coffee and drinks are available for purchase on board. All trains are fully licensed.
